My sister lives on an acreage just a few miles from our farm, as the crow flies. After leaving her place, I decided to take the long way home. Well, heck, why not......why always gaze at the same old scenery, when something intriguing may be waiting nearby around a different bend in the road. Right?? I knew you'd agree with me......
Here's a scene from that "long way home". Yes, I gave the sky color a spin on the editing wheel......in reality it was blue, and that was quite lovely, too......in reality. I've decided that bare tree branches are high on my list of favorite things to photograph......along with birds, vines, fenceposts, bridges, clouds, sky..........

The road to the site of the above scene appeared thus:
The melting of a winter's worth of snow has resulted in widely scattered minor flooding in Iowa. This road has been closed many times over the years due to high water.

IF I had chosen to take the usual way home-----the safer, more sensible way-----these fascinating scenes would not have come into view. To me they are fascinating, anyway......and I don't really care what anyone else thinks. I'm guessing that obstinate attitude is a symptom of my growing older......anyone else have an opinion on that??

A rock group named "Supertramp" had a hit back in the 70's called "Take the Long Way Home". Due to only a vague memory of the lyrics, I Googled the song's title. Here's a sampling of the rest of the song:
***********
Cause you're the joke of the neighborhood.......
Take the Long Way Home.......
***********
There are times you feel you're a part of the scenery......
Take the Long Way Home......
***********
Does it feel that your life's become a catastrophe....
OH, IT HAS TO BE FOR YOU TO GROW........!!!!
***********
You took the Long Way Home.......You took the Long Way Home.......
*************************
I would highly recommend it once in a while.......taking the Long Way Home, that is. Look around you.....be aware of your surroundings......notice what is there!

I'm thinking Frost's "The Road Not Taken"
Great pics as usual Jeannelle. I am also a firm believer in the power of the "long way home." I have a favorite way that is more country than others and I truly enjoy it. It's the rock roads for me, whenever possible. Have a great day Jeannelle. And thanks for the fun posts and great pictures always.
AH, Caution, the same thing came to me.
Jeanelle's thinking Super Tramp, I'm thinking Browning.
The Road Not Taken
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
I love the pictures, too. The top one looks like sunset...nice work.
The bottom one like a a raised road along a lake.
I enjoyed these comments all of you! Thanks! Welcome, "caution", who lives amongst a family of flags!
Sherry, I'm glad you enjoy the side roads, too. Its boring to always stay on the paved highways.
Mary and "caution".....thank you for bringing up the famous poem by Robert Frost.....and thanks, Mary, for including it in your comment.
I looked up someone's notes on the poem.....he says this poem is usually misunderstood to mean that all the difference happened due to taking the road less-traveled, when actually the poem points out that neither road is less-traveled by. Its simply a choice we have to make.
"Paths in woods and forks in roads are ancient and deep-seated metaphors for the lifeline, with its crises and decisions."
Thanks, everyone, I actually needed to hear this today.
You are a kindred spirit, Jeannelle, for I am often taking the long road home. Sometimes it's because I have my camera with me. Sometimes it's because I love to drive and other times it's just because I feel like it. Good for you. Loved the pics you got. The top one DOES look like a sunset almost. I love trees with bare branches that stand out in silhouette. Were you born in the autumn or winter as I was? I love the trees when they look like that.
No, Country Girl, I was born in June. For some reason, like you, I'm fascinated by silouettes and stark contrasts. I love to go driving, too.....out on the road is like a different dimension.
