In the background of the Vervain photo in the previous post was this chrysalis........... of a Monarch Butterfly..........click to see a Wikipedia photo.

Fascinating to me was the row of shiny gold fibers encircling the chrysalis. It looked just like a tiny gold chain, glittering in the sun.........or maybe a crown. Is this how the "Monarch" butterfly acquired its name?

Surely, the chrysalis concept must have inspired storytellers down through the ages. A place of transformation.......

I think I've read that Monarch butterflies exist on milkweed. Was that a milkweed in the photo?
Fascinating about the crown, by the way.
Hi, Pat,
Spotting the chrysalis was lucky.....it was lurking right there behind the vervain.

Hi, Laura,
Yeah, that would be cool to see the butterfly emerge. I'd have to cut down the plant its on and bring it to the house, but I probably won't go to that extreme.

rhymeswithplague,
It isn't hanging on a milkweed. I think its on a dried-up Meadow Rue.

Thanks, all, for dropping by!
Amazing aren't they - Mother Nature is pretty clever hey???

Hi, Country girl.....I had never seen a real chrysalis before, either!!
Reminds me of Mrs. Stevens 2nd grade classroom circa 1967. She would have jars of milkweed and we would watch the catepillars evolve into the great Monarchs. They migrate through California on the coast if you're ever out this way...

maybelline,
Hey.....I was in 3rd & 4th grade in '67. We didn't have a teacher who showed us the Monarch chrysalis, though.....good idea!
Thanks for the link to the Pismo Beach butterfly grove. Cool photo of the Monarchs all hanging together.
