Shawn Johnson

Do you recognize this teenager without her ponytail and Olympic uniform?
**

She is Shawn Johnson, Olympic gymnast, from West Des Moines, Iowa. Yesterday she earned a gold medal in the balance beam competition in Beijing. I, as an American, and an Iowan in particular, can say that I am very proud of this girl. I'm impressed not so much by her performances as by her poise and smiling demeanor, come victory or defeat. In her current high profile position, she is a wonderful example for other young athletes.

If there's one thing that turns me off, its a sore loser. I don't give much of a hoot about any particular sport, but I do care about the participants, and the example they set for others.

Congratulations, Shawn! Thank you for making Iowa proud!!

Heh!! I just did a post about Shawn tonight that will come online tomorrow morning! I guess all of us in Iowa are very, very, very proud of her!

I agree with you. She conducted herself with grace and honor all the way through. It is hard to believe she is only 16 years old.

I remember when I was 16 and, well, let's just say I was not any where near as mature as she is! Put another way, it might be better if I did not think too much about what I was like when I was 16!! Heh!!

Take care.

I had a hunch you'd be posting about her.

She's a very mature young woman. We enjoyed her a lot.
