Cling Creeper Cling

Yesterday morning, despite being buffeted by a stiff northeasterly wind, this Virginia Creeper leaf clung valiantly to the spruce needles.
*
Over the summer, a Virginia Creeper vine had worked its way up the trunk of one of our spruce trees, providing glowing red highlights in the treetop this autumn.
Here's what I find interesting.......see the leaves that have turned red........but, also notice that green leaves continue to develop further up the vine, as if it keeps sprouting new leaves right up until freezing weather arrives. I suppose that's what vines always do; even the pumpkin vines are still growing. There were more smaller green leaves sprouted on the vine above the ones in this photo.
The branches and leaves were waving back and forth and up and down in the wind, causing many of the pictures to turn out very blurry. I was somewhat dizzy and almost nauseous by the time I was finished watching these bright leaves bouncing in the camera window! Here's one that was remarkably sharp and clear......in my estimation, anyway.

Though the angry surges roll
On my tempest-driven soul
I am peaceful, for I know
Wildly though the winds may blow
I've an anchor safe and sure
That can evermore endure

*

Mighty tides about me sweep

Perils lurk within the deep

Angry clouds o'ershade the sky

And the tempest rises high

Still I stand the tempest's shock

For my anchor grips the Rock

*

I can feel the anchor fast

As I meet each sudden blast

And the cable, though unseen

Bears the heavy strain between

Through the storm I safely ride

Till the turning of the tide

*

Troubles almost 'whelm the soul

Griefs like billows o'er me roll

Tempters seek to lure astray

Storms obscure the light of day

But in Christ I can be bold

I've an anchor that shall hold

*

Chorus:

And it holds, my anchor holds

Blow your wildest then, O gale

On my bark so small and frail

By His grace I shall not fail

For my anchor holds, my anchor holds

*

Anyone remember this old hymn? We used to sing it at the church I grew up in; it was a favorite at Sunday evening "Request Night" singalongs. I always enjoyed the bass rhythm of the chorus: "For it holds, it holds, my anchor holds".

*

Listen to the tune of "My Anchor Holds" at Cyberhymnal.

*

Have a great day! May your anchor hold! Keep clinging on, everyone!

Thanks for your comment. Just for your information everyday I suggest to my readers a link that I think is worth a visit. Yours certainly qualified.
I liked the pictures and the old hymn.
It reminded me of a song I learned soon after God brought me back to the faith. As I remember it it went
" Be very sure , Be very sure
Your anchor holds and grips the solid rock.
That rock is Jesus
Yes He's the one'
There was of course more but my memory is no longer as good as it once was.
Thanks for bringing back the memory of that special time of fellowship.

I love your photos - and I remember that hymn!
I'm glad my anchor is holding today... we've been dealing with 50 mph winds for 36 hours or so...lol

Thank you for linking to my blogs yesterday... I'm hoping to show people that if this little farming community can make changes for the future, anyone can!

Hi, Dr. John,

Thank you for stopping by and commenting! The hymn you mention is "In Times Like These". Its lyrics are not on Cyberhymnal, but can be found here, along with an audio link to the tune on piano:

Online Hymnal: In Time Like These

Thanks again for the mention on your blog!

Hi, Anita,

Thanks for stopping in. Sounds like you need to hold onto your hat! I was happy to find your blog from Greensburg and look forward to reading more about your tornado experiences and the rebuilding. In my area, new houses and steel sheds have popped up on the demolished farmsteads.

Blessing to your town!

I know that song too! But I looked in every hymnal on my shelves and it wasn't in any of them. Very strange....

Good post.

Hi, Rhymsie,

Yes, that "In Times Like These" is very familiar to me, too, but, as you said.....it is in none of the hymnals I own, either! And, on Cyberhymnal, information about the author is given, but no lyrics. Must be a copyright issue. I'm trying to recall where I used to hear it......perhaps on the radio. I don't think we sang it at church. It is a comforting song, though.

Wonderful photos, Jeannelle, and beautiful (and reassuring) hymn lyrics. I don't recall ever singing that particular hymn in our Baptist church, but we should have.

Thanks so much for visiting my blogs!! My quotes on Word Word Words depend on what kind of mood I am in wach time....

Love the photos. At the first house we moved to in our little valley here, there was a virginia creeper that grew all over a trellis in the yard...It was so pretty and kept right on putting on green leaves until a hard killing frost would take it out for the year. I loved that yard, it was all landscaped when we moved in and I hated leaving it....now I have gravel, gravel, gravel.....

Love the song, I had never heard it before.

Happy Day to you........

No, I don't know that song. It sounds like a comforting one.

Beautiful photos. They look almost Christmasy to me.

I always thought that was a fun hymn, too. Now I've got to click over to that hymnal site you mentioned.
