My son came home from school today and told me to look up "The Day It Rained Ducks". Evidently, the story was discussed today in one of his classes, and I do now recall that I've heard older guys talk about it over the years. It happened on Armistice Day, 1940.......68 years ago today.

There's an article about it on the Iowa DNR website:

Incredible!! I may make a copy of this and hand it out to my students. These early winter storms can come up SO fast!! It is amazing.
I enjoyed your post yesterday about the Cozy Cab! Heh!! I had one on my 3020 John Deere tractor and took it off. It was okay but I like the tractor better without it on as I can see better - but it did stop the wind in the winter and that was nice! (Notice there is a bubble on the right side for the brake pedal - that is how tight it is! Heh!!)
Take care.
Wow, Jeannelle! What a story. I read the entire thing and was amazed at the dramatic weather. Thanks for remembering this time in our history.
Russell,
Yes, that DNR article is a good retelling of the storm story. Old guys have talked about it around here for years on "Armistice Day".
I wouldn't blame anyone for removing the "cozy cab". It is rather difficult to see out of. Its better shelter than a heat-houser, though, which we had on our IH 560 when I was a kid.

countrygirl,
Thanks for stopping in! I hope you don't have insomnia again, though. That's no fun.
Yeah, I was glad my son came home talking about the old storm story. He was quite intrigued with it.
Wow, what a storm!! I'm surprised that my dad - who lived through that - has never mentioned it before. I sent him the link to see if he remembers. Thanks for sharing that!! Incredible.
Hi, Mrs. B,
I actually had never heard of this storm, either, until after I was married and living in a different community. I believe my dad would have been only 8 at the time, so might not have recalled it. The ones who could recall it well are dying away.
