I’m in a dither OVER dandelions……though I was definitely UNDER this first one.
It may be corny, but I felt compelled to try and find a unique point of view, considering the fact that every flower-blogger and their cousin are posting photos of dandelions right now. ‘Tis the season……
Besides……my undignified position beneath the yellow-rayed flower provided an interesting angle on this Red-Wing Blackbird. He was impatiently squawking, “Hurry up, I can’t hold onto this tippy wire much longer!”
Dandelion togetherness…….is that unique? Probably not.
How about a dandelion constellation? This one might be The Dandy Dipper in search of a handle: Oops…..sorry……this one might be upside-down. Maybe you can figure it out.
Please, give this next constellation a name. It will go down in the annals of history…….really soon…….courtesy of the lawnmower blades.
Gaze upon the Lemony Way galaxy:
Uh-oh……an UFO made a crash landing. Aliens have arrived! Actually, its a common corn husk……our yard is full of them and I could care less. They blow in from the fields and are easily pulverized by the lawnmower.
“Waiter, waiter! There’s a fly in my dandelion!”
Take time to appreciate the dandelions in your world today!

You may have noticed mentions of lawn mowing. Yesterday……FINALLY……the weather offered decent mowing conditions. It had been too wet or too cold before that. At this point in my life, I refuse to ride around on a lawn tractor and freeze.
It took several hours to complete the mowing job yesterday---PLENTY of time to ponder many things, including possible topics for future blogposts. As is always the case after an afternoon of lawnmowing, my clothes and shoes ended up full of grass clippings and pine needles---ITCHY, ITCHY! There’s a sore spot on my head from hitting a tree branch, but that’s par for the course---and, it could have been worse. At least the first mowing is now done with!

[I liked this column in Sunday’s Waterloo Courier. Good for graduates--or anyone--to read.
And, this story was interesting, too.]

i love some dandylions... they were always fun to rub in my hands and turn my skin yellow:)
YOUR CHRISTMAS LIST:
1 lawn mower riding helmet

The Blue Ridge Gal
You've got the lawn swathing done! Now you have to bale it, stack it and feed it. :-D. The mowing helmet sounds like a good idea.
Love your dandy-lion photos! The view of one from below is great! Very clever of you, m'dear.
Looks as though a riding helmet should be a necessary piece of equipment for your mowing activities. :)
I mowed my lawn today, so I am intimately acquainted with dandelions.
I do not have a huge riding mower like yours. I have an electric mower whose narrow swath I walk in while trying desperately to keep the orange electrical cord from being being shredded to bits.
It's such fun being a homeowner.
Not.
Our front lawn is full of dandelion bouquets. I'm fine with that, but my husband is itching to mow them down. We don't do the pesticide thing at all, so we must face the consequences. Oh well.
They are pretty until they turn to seed - then they're still attractive with their fluffy seedpod heads, but not when the seeds blow to the winds.

Hi, Laura,
My sisters and I used to tie together a chain of dandelions for necklaces.

Hi, Blue Grass Girl,
Good idea you have there! I don't know if I could stand wearing one, though, on warm summer days.

Hi, Leenie,
Truly, the grass was so long in some spots, I should go out and scoop up the clippings to feed to the calves.

Hi, Pat,
Thank you! And, you've cast the second vote for a helmet.

Hi, rhymsie,
Are you serious? A corded lawnmower!? I've never heard of such a thing. Sounds like a pain, but maybe easier to start than the gas ones. Be careful with it.

Hi, Poetikat,
Actually, I'm glad to hear you let the dandelions grow....we don't use any chemicals on our lawn, being out here on the farm, who cares how it looks, anyway. But, I don't like chemicals so I wouldn't use them anyway.
I just finished digging up a grocery bag of dandelions. I have a special digger and it is actually very satisfying to dig them up by the roots. Not a practical idea for you I realize, but for my little strip of lawn by the street it works. When I was young I used to love riding the mower and pondering, but now I let TB do the work with the push mower. I do watch him out the window once in awhile, I enjoy that too. Ha.
Hi, Nancy,
I've never heard of the dandelion digger. Sounds like a good idea....their roots are so long and difficult to pull out. I do pull the ones that pop up in my flower beds....or, I try to. I may have to look into that special digging tool.
