Coneflowers & No Baling

July 17th 029 (2)

Earlier this evening, I went to and fro watching steaks sizzle on the grill and coneflower heads glow in the rays of twilight.  I don’t have macro capabilities, but using the flash in the first photo seemed to help bring out the details.  Especially, I wanted to try and show you the tiny golden-yellow blossoms encircling the coneflower heads right now.

In hopes that baling would work later in the day, my son raked hay all morning……and an unseasonably chilly morning it was, I might add. (The bird in the photo is a barn swallow.)  The overcast skies, cool temps, and damp air combined to prevent any baling from happening.  Hopefully, that will change tomorrow!

July 17th 002 I had been all psyched up to drive the baler this afternoon, but ended up being forced to mow the lawn for several hours instead.  Boo-hoo-hoo!  And, yeah…..I nearly froze!  Had to wear long sleeves, a jacket, gloves, and a head covering…….in the middle of July!!

This evening I moped around feeding bottles to my 22 calves;  I happened to glance up one time and there was the first sunshine of the day, setting the cornfield aglow in green.  It didn’t last long, either!

Hey, here’s some encouraging news on the healthcare reform front:  Wendell Potter, a former health insurance exec, has turned whistle-blower.  Good for him!

P.S. The raking picture was great, with the added magic of the swallow. Wow.

I agree with Evansmom. You do need to put a show or book together. Your eye is truly lovely.

The barn swallows are bigger in Iowa than in Texas. Also, my mom and brother have been at a lake we love in Minnesota all week. Freezing to death in an old cabin.

I love the way the coneflower's petal drop away from the center like that.

Having never been up close and personal with coneflowers, I never knew about the little yellow blossoms. I will look closer next time. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I used to work in insurance... property and casualty and believe me when I say I could have done some whistle blowing too. Crooks!

I played whistle-blower once, and now sincerely wish I hadn't.

I love the look of those hay rakes (?) They're poetic in appearance.

Go ahead and plan your first show. You know we'll be there:)
