The Iowa State campanile towers proudly above the tree-line along the south edge of the central campus field.
Here is an ISU library website full of fascinating information about the campanile. Links include:
Ten of the bells have inscriptions. Here’s a sampling:
Ring merrily, ye chimes, evermore. --- Charles McKay
Harmonizing this earth with what we feel above. --- Shelley
Every deed of goodness done is like a chord set in the heart. --- Thomas MacKellan
Then pealed the bells more loud and deep….God is not dead, nor does he sleep. The wrong shall fail. The right prevail. With peace on earth, goodwill to men. --- Longfellow (One of my all-time favorite quotes.)
The architectural details around the base are very beautiful. These photos don’t do them justice; we were walking with the tour group and there wasn’t much time for loitering around taking pictures.
I enjoyed the view looking north through the shaded base out onto the sunny central campus field. You can’t tell it from the photo, but the scene was quite stunning, especially at first glance.

(Have I mentioned that this ISU campus tour involved LOTS and LOTS of walking. Oh, my aching feet…..even in “comfortable” shoes!)

P.S. – Here’s one more photo……a zoomed-in look at the details of the top of the campanile tower:
