First Crop Hay

Our son is doing fine following his appendectomy.  He remains in the hospital, but that doesn’t stop the farm work.  The cutting of the season’s first crop of alfalfa hay continued:

May 12 (30) Our neighbor has a newer haybine than we do.  He came over and demonstrated how it runs much faster and cuts wider swaths.  I see one in our future:

May 13 (1)

Most of this first hay crop is being chopped for silage.  My husband, along with a relative of ours and our neighbor, worked until dark yesterday and got nearly done with the hay that was cut.

The right equipment always makes a job run smoother.

A beautiful crop.

I just love the smell of freshly mown hay. That looks like great quality.

The new hay swather was delivered over the winter and sits ready to start first crop in the next week or so! It is interesting to see how haying is different in different locations around the country.
