My previous post inadvertantly evolved to include the subject of hog-calling and ended with a request for readers to comment on their own hog-calling skills. The witty author of the blog, "rhymeswithplague", obliged and mentioned in his comment that he had discussed hog-calling in a story he submitted to the Prairie Home Companion website awhile back. The name of his entertaining tale there is Florabelle Oxley, and definitely is worth reading!!

Well, thank you very much for the kind words! And for the link on your blog to my story! Everything in that story is pretty much true. Only the names were changed to protect the innocent and the guilty.
I hereby promise, Scout's honor [holding up three fingers] to put a link on my blog to any story of yours that gets published.
I did wonder if Florabelle Oxley related true events.....it did sound rather like it did. And, what good thoughts at the end of your story!
Florabelle.....love the name! I know a Laurabelle.
Hey, I click "publish" almost everyday!!
It's me again. I neglected to say "What a surprise!" to click on your blog and find that link.
If you liked that story, you might also enjoy an earlier story of mine called Silver that appeared on the same site in September 2006. But you probably would have to post something about horses before you could work in another link.
Florabelle is a made-up name. The neighbor's real name was Pearline and I'm not going to reveal her last name. I invented the surname Oxley for Florabelle because Pearline was part Indian, and here in Georgia and the Carolinas the names Oxenham and Locklear (yes, as in Heather Locklear) are common surnames among the Lumbee Indian tribe, and I wanted to keep it plausible. Of course, in the story it was Bud who was an Oxley, not Florabelle. I once knew a family named Exley, but they weren't Lumbee Indians. Funny how the creative juices work.
Thanks again for the plug!
rhymeswithplague,
Linking to your story seemed to fit right in! I hoped you wouldn't mind.
I think you have a VERY creative juicer working in that head of yours!! But, before I read "Silver", a story about a horse, you say........did you steal an idea from the "Lone Ranger"??
Yes, indeedy! I called my actual horse Silver after the Lone Ranger's Silver, even though his Silver was solid white and my Silver was a "painted pony." I was a kid! Who said kids have to make sense?
Of course, I am living proof that adults don't have to make sense, either.
good stuff jeannelle, thanks.
I just realized I said Oxenham was a Lumbee Indian name and I meant to say Oxendine. In fact, a man named John Oxendine has been Georgia's state insurance commissioner for quite a while.
rhymeswithplague,
I also impressed with how thorough you are with your facts and your grammar and usage and all things pertaining to writing!!
Hi, jump back!
Thanks for stopping by. You had a nice SkyWatch photo!
