SkyWatch #50

Welcome to northeast Iowa, USA!

Last Tuesday the weather was unbearably hot and humid. Not surprisingly, by late afternoon, a grumbling squall line of clouds rolled in from the west:

23rd 037

23rd 032

We could see the rain falling several miles to the south:

23rd 049 After the storm……an amazing cloud display accompanied the sunset:

23rd 074

Would you call that last one a vermillion sky? Absolutely amazing! It must be something to have that vast expanse without any tall buildings to block your view.
Wow!

Each one got more amazing. That multi coloured sky is dazzling.

Hi, Poetikat,

Thanks for stopping in. I'm sure I take for granted being able to see so much sky. Hey..."vermillion"...that's a great word and surely does describe the color perfectly.

I hope you did not get that hail storm today. Take care!

Hi, Babooshka,

Thanks for visiting and commenting. Stormy skies are fascinating....as long as the storm is not right overhead.

Woah, that last picture is a bit of a shocker after the first three! Hope you get some relief from the heat (wouldn't mind some relief here too haha)! Happy Friday!

Oh my, such beautiful skies. =)

I could watch skies like that for hours. I find them so beautiful.
Outstanding pictures!

Okay, those "squall" clouds scare the doodoo out of me. I've never been the same since watching The Wizard of Oz as a young one. Good thing I live where F5's don't rip off roofs and shove trees through concrete. Magnificent nature, but scary.

All are great but the first and last ones are my favourites, well done.

Have a great weekend

Wonderful series of pictures you captured. Love them all however the low cloud which looks like a tornado on its side thrilled me.

Not that there is anything wrong with living where you can see SKY in all it's wonders plus corn field in every direction that look like calendar photos.

Jeannelle, I remember looking out and seeing that beautiful sunset in our area also. But, since I was already in my nighty and housecoat, I didn't get a picture of it. Thanks for sharing on skywatch today.

Those clouds weren't quite as scary as the ones on Sunday night. I just got a job working at a nursing home and I was working that night. It can be really scary with sirens going off, and looming wall clouds. Living in more southern Iowa we didn't have bad storms on Tuesday. Just a lot of rain and thunder.

I love how fast storms form here!

Gorgeous captures!

We used to live in central Missouri in a log cabin half way up a hillside with a covered porch facing miles of sky to the west. Sitting in a rocker on that porch with a glass of iced tea or lemonade watching a late afternoon storm front come in followed by rainbows in the east and sunsets in the west... Gawd, tain't nothin' like it! It just isn't the same up north.

Oh that last is gorgeous! And how selfish were you not to send us your rain? ;)

Great photos Janelle. I especially liked the first one - great composition with the line of green below the cloud giving a strong contrast. And the sunset - what beautiful colours.

All the photos are amazing. I can't believe you get all the rain, can you send some over parched California, pretty please.

Bravo, Jeannelle, on both your 50th Skywatch and these photos! That last one is just gorgeous.

Such dramatic photos.

Thanks for telling me about the bad link in my post. Yes, the episode you saw was part of the series I describe. Powerful, isn't it?

Hi, Amy,

Its hot all over the country, I think. Yeah, the contrast in skies was amazing that evening.

Hi, Sanna,

Thank you for stopping by and for your kind words!

******

Hi, James,

I'm with you....I love to watch skies, too. Thank you for visiting!

******

Hi, Leenie,

My stomach always tightens up when these storm clouds come into view. I learned from last year's tornado storm to listen for a constant far-off rumble which means something really serious is going on. I didn't hear that on Tuesday evening, thank goodness.

Hi, Guy D,

Thank you for stopping by and for your kind comment!

********

Hi, bowledover,

Hey, I'm glad you liked that creepy cloud. It looked worse than it was.

********

Hi, Leenie,

I should be more appreciative of the wide open sky views I have here.

********

Hi, Gramma Ann,

Haha....being in pj's never stops me from running outside to snap photos. (Within reason, and unless there's visitors here, of course.) One of the benefits of living out in the country.

******

Hi, Sarah Katie,

Thanks for stopping in! I think you live near Gramma Ann. Yes, you guys had some serious storms in your area on Sunday night. I wonder if you had to move the residents into the hallway at the nursing home when the sirens went off. Sirens are frightening, that's for sure.

*******

Hi, Aussie Nikki,

Thank you for stopping by and for the link to your SkyWatch post!

********

Hi, Old Gray Egg,

Wow....there'd be no need for TV there, for your entertainment would be the view from your porch. Sounds fantastic....as long as the storms stayed far away.

********

Hi, Flea,

Thanks for stopping by. Oh, my....I would send you rain if I could! We've had plenty lately, that's for sure. I hope you get some soon!

********

Hi, Ms Soup,

Thank you for visiting and for your kind words! I, too, liked the contrast of the hay field with the sky.

*******

Hi, Photo Cache,

Thank you for stopping by here! Yes, yes, I'd send rain your way if I could!

Hi, Country Girl,

Thank you for visiting! It IS SkyWatch's 50th week of operation. I think I missed a few weeks along the way.

Hi, Ruth,

Thank you for stopping by.

Yes, I really enjoyed the Van Gogh episode, even if it was in the middle of the night.

Wow awesome clouds. I did my post this week on storm clouds too, but we don't have the beautiful open area that is shown in your photos

That dark, foreboding cloud hanging over the green field is a wonderful capture. Of course, that technicolor sunset is also hard to beat!

Those were some scary clouds, until the end when they lit up as gold!
