Bales of the Evening

July 16th 069 Hot off the memory card……..these photos were taken 30 minutes ago, at around 7:45 p.m.  We were blessed with a sunny, breezy afternoon and evening, though at noontime the skies were somewhat overcast.  At that time, Husband checked the weather forecast on the internet---it said there was a 20% chance of showers this afternoon.  He sat there for a few minutes, pondering over what course to take……rake a portion of the hay, or just let it lie.  It would be better to leave it alone if rain was coming.  But, then he decided to go ahead with raking, anyway…….and, as you can see, the gamble paid off.

July 16th 052 Rarely does it happen that hay can be baled in this late in the day.  Usually, moisture from the evening dew settles in, making the hay too damp to be baled.

July 16th 068

Betsy and I simply watched and listened to the hustle and bustle of the tractors…..

July 16th 058  Then I suddenly remembered…….supper needs fixing!  See ya later!

I love the way the sun is making a halo of Betsy's fur.

What's for supper?

There's something quite beautiful about a round bale of hay. I love to see them in the fields. Very nice photos, J.

You should do a book about farmlife! Your photos are amazing.

More great pictures!! I wish I could smell that hay, one of my favorites. That Echinacea from the other day looks like of bit of a cross with your march milkweed from the other day. Mine is the regular purple kind and just starting to bloom. Wow you must be busy with all of those calves to feed, hay going up, etc.!! Regarding the overall dairy situation, you have my sympathy there. Can relate in a way because business is so bad here too, but at least we don't have that psychological connection and some of the issues in the article from Sherry. Seems like things have got to get better sometime soon!! Can't get much worse anyway.

PS. Oops I meant swamp milkweed. And also I think Evansmom is right about the book, you should consider it.

What a feeling of accomplishment, when you look out across the fields and see the bales of hay! Haying was my favorite time of year when I lived on the family farm/ranch in SD. I miss it a great deal, but seeing your pictures takes me back there!! Thanks for sharing!!

I love driving past fields with bales of hay in them! I remember when I was a kid and would see them,(which wasn't very often since I grew up in California) I would pretend they were woolly mammoths.
