Greetings from northeast Iowa, USA! These photos were taken a few days ago. Swaths of freshly-cut alfalfa hay are visible in the first one, beneath a sky of cheerful, fluffy clouds.
Blackbirds and cowbirds begin flocking together in midsummer, as shown in the photo below. I’m not sure of the reason for the timing of the gathering together…..perhaps it is prompted by the young ones learning to fly proficiently. These birds on the wire were the first grouping I’d noticed so far this summer.
Thank you for visiting this SkyWatch Friday post! You can find all the other sky photo links at Skyley.com. Happy first birthday to SWF, too!

The hay's in. My guinea pig will be well pleased with the news.
These are wonderful photos.
it's friday already??? :)
Gorgeous hay field. Beautiful sky. Fun birds. I have the blue barn painting framed. I named it after you. See comment next to my pic next time you visit.
Lovely photos of clouds and yes the clouds where quite striking this week, I took a few photos of clouds on Tuesday myself.
a lovely capture...the cloud line in the back of the capture is waiting to make its presence. love the vibrant green against the beautiful sky.
Wow, the first one has great colors, well done!!
Have a nice SWF
I love the green and the blue and the tiny fluffy things... no storms here. I remember the smell of freshly cut alfalfa out on my grandpa's farm in Illinois. I can almost smell it here.
Such nice photos. I do like Iowa though I was an Indiana boy back in the day. Loved the photo of the calf and the little lad checking each other out. Wonderful!
Very nice captured.I like the first one very much.
I think the birds were gathering to smell that fresh-cut alfalfa! Beautiful emerald against the blue sky.
I love the contrast between the fluffy small clouds and the rows of hay.
All summer we have had a few Grackles caring for their babies, but this morning there were ten blackbirds of all different sorts on the ground under the birdfeeder in the backyard. I was surprised. It seems early in the summer for them to start gathering. Interesting you are so far away and they are gathering there too.
Enjoyed the photo of your son on the tractor with the bird in flight.
