SkyWatch #53

July 12th 017

Greetings from northeast Iowa, USA!  These photos were taken a few days ago.   Swaths of freshly-cut alfalfa hay are visible in the first one, beneath a sky of cheerful, fluffy clouds.

Blackbirds and cowbirds begin flocking together in midsummer, as shown in the photo below.  I’m not sure of the reason for the timing of the gathering together…..perhaps it is prompted by the young ones learning to fly proficiently.  These birds on the wire were the first grouping I’d noticed so far this summer.

I love the green and the blue and the tiny fluffy things... no storms here. I remember the smell of freshly cut alfalfa out on my grandpa's farm in Illinois. I can almost smell it here.

Such nice photos. I do like Iowa though I was an Indiana boy back in the day. Loved the photo of the calf and the little lad checking each other out. Wonderful!

I think the birds were gathering to smell that fresh-cut alfalfa! Beautiful emerald against the blue sky.

I love the contrast between the fluffy small clouds and the rows of hay.

All summer we have had a few Grackles caring for their babies, but this morning there were ten blackbirds of all different sorts on the ground under the birdfeeder in the backyard. I was surprised. It seems early in the summer for them to start gathering. Interesting you are so far away and they are gathering there too.
Enjoyed the photo of your son on the tractor with the bird in flight.
