Corn crib charm…
I snapped this photo a few years ago. The large corncrib, which no longer exists, sat along Highway 18 east of West Union, Iowa. Look closely and you’ll see that the structure was “4-Sale”. I hope someone bought it to recycle the old lumber.
When I was a kid we had a corncrib similar to this one. Ear corn was stored in the sides of the building and shelled corn was kept in bins that were in the center above the drive-through area. When the crib was empty, we had fun playing hide-and-seek in there.

i am slowly learning about barns from people who are much more familiar with them. Still, I don't think I have seen (in real life) one like this before.

oh, yes, please! save them in pixels at least! i have seen a barn like this on another blog - it is marvelous! like a shed mounted on top of a barn!
I looked at this photo and thought - "that's one of the most beautiful corn cribs I've ever seen". I too hope it was salvaged somehow. But what a shame if it was torn down. The wood can fetch a handsome price around these parts. You know Jeannelle, I have similar memories of corn crib play. The one we have on the family farm was the same design - and it still stands today (for me) as a test of my courage too. I scaled it's upper reaches, with white knuckles and sweaty hands, to overcome my fear of heights. It worked for that day, and it felt wonderful, but unfortunately I still carry around that bit of fear! Oh my it's hard to see this barn is gone. And yes you are right I hope they recycle the wood I bet there are plenty that are still in good condition. Happy New Year!

What a great building! It's got such a unique shape.
Very interesting building and fun to read your childhood memory.
That was a great old structure. It's a shame to see them torn down to make way in most cases for the metal buildings that are hard to be thought of as "charming"! Hope you get lots of photos of the old barns!
I love how you would have come up on this one just by the roadway. I'm so sad it's gone. It looks like it was still in fine condition.
I know how you feel about things being torn down. I've thought so myself lately that I better get a couple of structures before they are gone. :)

THAT big ol barn is GONE? NOOO! It's sooo beautiful, I can't believe someone would destroy such an awesome & historical structure!!! Shame on them!

Wow, I love coming around a curve and seeing a view like this. Hate to think that it is gone.
These old structures add a lot of character and charm to rural areas. I guess they can add danger as well if they are not maintained. Do get out with the camera and save their spirit.
