Nell, I don't know how the quilt blocks on barns got started. Maybe its related to the hex sign tradition. Awhile back I saw a place that sells these quilt blocks for barns.

A fall leaf at that! First I've seen. Think the reason that we love these barn quilts is that they're so unexpected. You're driving along and hey! there's a big ole leaf or some other quilt design on the side of a barn. Love rural USA.

I saw quilt patterns like this on barns in Tennessee , part of the Appalachian quilt trail. I like seeing this in the landscape and you captured a good one.
