Our church, last night on Christmas Eve:
We arrived at the 7 p.m. service a bit late, due to milking chores. Wouldn't you know it, the only empty pews were way up in the front, so we traipsed in and sat there. Well.......it was a great vantage point for sneaking a few photos, anyway.
*
The service was put on by the Sunday School children.......there was twenty-one of them, in preschool through eighth grade. Their Nativity scene was situated at the foot of the red-hearted, wooden cross in the next photo:
Next is just a random conglomeration scene of what was visible from where I was sitting. Notice the stained glass windows in the background.......they're completely unremarkable without light shining through them! Of course, if I would have been observing the windows from the outdoors, their colors would have been evident. Point of view makes all the difference!

Finally.......the video below was taken last evening while we were singing the first verse of
"Silent Night".
"Silent Night".
Usually, we think of that carol as having only three stanzas, but
here is a link showing six verses of "Stille Nacht" in both German and English. Last night, it was printed in the bulletin that we were to sing the first verse in German, but the congregation was a bit confused.......some were singing the English words and some the German; my daughter can be heard commenting on that later in the video.......she was confused, too! I think in years past we have sung the first verse in English, followed by that stanza's version in German, followed by the remaining verses.

Each year on Christmas Eve, candles are lit and the church lights dimmed for the singing of this lovely carol hymn:
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht.
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
*
Silent night, holy night,
All is calm; all is bright.
Roun' yon virgin, mother and child,
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht,
Alles schläft; einsam wacht.
Nur das traute hochheilige Paar.
Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar,
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!
Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh!

Silent night, holy night,
All is calm; all is bright.
Roun' yon virgin, mother and child,
Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace!
Sleep in heavenly peace!

Merry Christmas to you and your entire family, Jeannelle.
I clicked on the Silent Night Wikipedia article and noticed that the original manuscript shows six verses. I have never known any more than three in English. At the bottom of the article, big enough to read, are the same six verses in German, but still only three in English. When I tried Altavista's Babelfish translator, I got mostly gibberish.
It would be very cool if you could post an English translation of all six verses here in the comments.
Oh, and Danke schoen.
Hi, Rhymsie,
Merry Christmas to you and yours, too!!
Thanks for the suggestion......I added a link to the six verses in both languages.
Have a wonderful day!

Hi, Gail,
Thank you for the good wishes and the same to you and your family!
so lovely.... love that grandpa came to visit... we always felt mikes dad in the house when all were about... probably telling everyoen to tone it down a level or two or 4 cause his family is a loud bunch!
Merry Christmas!
ps love mooky dangeling off the arm !
I have this picture of you in my mind now, sitting in that pew with your camera, making movies!
Jeannelle, it's been so wonderful 'knowing' you this past year through blogging.
May your days be merry and bright!
Merry Christmas, my dear Jeannelle. Thanks for sharing part of your church service with us. Our service started at 10:30 with carols, then the mass at 11. It was Dec. 25 when we finished at 12:10. We, also, sang Silent Night at the close of the service. I'm off, again, to church this morning for the Christmas Day service; I'm the lay reader/eucharistic minister today, which is a real privilege for me. Then, it's off to lunch with my family. I'm taking baked beans and a pecan pie (we're having non-traditional barbeque for dinner.)
Hope you have a peaceful day.
Merry Christmas, enjoy the day with your family. Great pictures from your church last night, I wish I had thought to bring my camera. Also love the picture of Mookie, so tired. I'm glad you had fun with your girlfriends and it was nice that you had a couple of extra days to get ready.
I remember learning the first verse in German a long time ago. Thanks for sharing the video and pictures. They were great!
Merry Christmas!
Hi, Laura,
Glad you understand. Thanks for dropping by on this busy day!

Hi, Country Girl,
Thank you, too, for swinging by on Christmas day! You know, some of the parents of the little kids in the program were taking pictures, so I thought, "why not me, too". Heehee. Thank goodness I was sitting by my daughter and not my husband.....he would probably have said, "Oh, put the camera down."

Hi, Pat,
I hope you found time for a nap today, for you must have been very tired after the late night and church again the next morning. We also had church this morning....mostly it was singing of Christmas hymns. That's wonderful that you can take part in the service as a lay reader. Our particular Lutheran synod is very old-fashioned and frowns on anyone other than the pastor being up front to do any reading, and for sure women are not allowed to do such a thing.

Hi, Nancy,
Thanks for visiting here on Christmas Day, too. You know, grabbing the camera and taking it along to church last night was an afterthought, and it was only right before we sang the German verse that it dawned on me to try and do a video to record the singing.

Hi, Nancy M.,
You must be of German background.....Lutheran, too? Thanks for stopping by on Christmas!
