We have a nice big lilac bush in our backyard and I love the beautiful scent they put out each spring. But you are right. How do they survive each winter?? Here is our lilac bush:

You know all of my roses are begining to get little leaf buds and yet it frosts each night lately. I think the weather is confusing everything. I love lilacs and grew up with many surrounding my parents old farm house. I am going to plant some this year....I miss the smell.
I love your blog.

Actually, all trees amaze me with the way their leaf buds form in late autumn and are exposed to the rigors of winter. Some years, ice comes, and then wind, and many bud parts break off. But, then, come spring, the leaves always appear!
