Palmarum Typo & Oatmeal Cake

Sorry for the strange picture; I was goofing around with this photo of a clump of Queen Anne's Lace from our road ditch last summer:

Today is Palmarum, the Sixth Sunday of Lent, also known as Palm Sunday, the day Jesus was greeted by a crowd waving palm branches as he road into Jerusalem on a young donkey (John 12:12-15, Luke 19:28-38, Mark 11:1-10, Matthew 21:1-11. ) HOWEVER, this particular Sunday of the year is when Confirmation takes place at the Lutheran Church I attend, so very little focus is ever put on the Triumphal Entry story. The Gospel reading was from Matthew 27, relating the events of Good Friday. Idiot me has never understood why the Crucifixion story is read on Palm Sunday!
***************************
In the church bulletin this morning, there was a typo in the Introit which we read responsively. I love typos.......the typos of life are sometimes very significant! It was in Psalm 31:1, which correctly reads....."In you, O Lord, I have taken refuge......". Our bulletin had it printed as, "In you, O Lord, I have taken REFUSE......."! The noun "refuse" means "trash" or "useless stuff".......and, in a way, you can make that fit in the verse, too. We need to give God the trash and useless stuff of our lives so He can make something worthwhile out of it! Leave your burdens at the foot of the Cross..... that's what the church of my childhood used to emphasize. Maybe that was the message we needed to hear this morning.
**********************
I fixed taco salad for our noon meal today. While preparing that, I somehow started thinking about one of my grandmothers who had been a wonderful cook......of course, all grandmas fit that description when you're a kid. I looked up one of her recipes----for Oatmeal Cake----and quickly whipped that together for dessert. I used to watch Grandma cook.......she never measured ingredients......she just threw in handfuls of flour, sugar, etc. I find myself doing that more often as I get older.
**********************
Here's the very easy recipe for Ferne's Oatmeal Cake......it might make good muffins, too:
*******************
1 1/4 cup boiling water
1 cup quick oats
1 stick butter
1/2 cup chopped dates (optional)
1 cup brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup flour
******
1/2 cup chopped nuts
1 cup chocolate chips
********************
In bowl, place cut-up butter, dates, and oats; pour boiling water over this (I used hot coffee today in place of the boiling water) and mix until butter melts. Add other ingredients, except nuts and chips. Mix; pour into greased 9x13" cake pan. Sprinkle nuts and chocolate chips on top. Bake at 350 for 23 minutes.
**************************
After lunch, my daughter and I installed the wireless router so she can connect her laptop computer to the internet here in our house.........and I will be able to use my computer at the same time. Yippee!!
************************
After my cursor clicks the orange "PUBLISH POST" button, I intend to motate on out the door for a long walk.
*******************
A pleasant Palm Sunday is wished to each person who reads this!!
******************
Ok......I've returned from that aforementioned walk. While fast-walking to a creek bridge and back, this excerpt from a song started playing in my head, to the beat of my footsteps......."HoZanna,HeyZanna,ZannaZannaHo,ZannaHo,ZannaHey,Za-a-anna.....".
********
Hey.....what's that tune from??? I ask, not because I don't know, but to see if you know.

I smiled--Hey you leave such long posts and with my short memory I have to say....hmmm now what are all the things she wrote on!!! ?? Hey--I love the seasons of the church calandar--it is such a wonderment to me (hey just go with the flow of my spellings and made up words etc., ok ...girl!)We had the grand entrance into church today--laying our palms before "Jesus"--then the choir and children sang "Blessed is He who Comes"--it was beautiful. Then the processional was "All Glory , Laud, and Honor" which was utterly awesome with our big pipe organ booming!! I would like my funeral to have that one in it (I think I keep finding hymns I love---maybe when I have my funeral we will have a big hymn sing all day!). And we had the longest scripture reading ever---3 pages for just the gospel reading!! It was from Matthew 26:36-75 and 27:1-56!! We had about 7 people reading--one narrator and others reading the parts and the church being the crowd. When that was all done we really didn't need a sermon; It actually was quite quite powerful by itself!! I like your queen anne's lace. And mmmm, wish I could have flour--I got so excited reading your recipe, thinking it had no flour---till I read to the end of the ingredients!! Blessings to you and yours. ps we have a router too---we sometimes have 3 or more computers going at the same time when the kids come for a visit with their laptops. I have a laptop (but it has to be plugged in because my battery is dead dead dead) Ohya, I know the tune--HA!! Your a weird one , Julie Jordon--that's a quote from a different song , but it could apply to you. Hey, I was seeing if I could make this comment as long as your blog post---just kidding!! I have not posted today yet....will do much later.....LOVE TO YOU and ALL them there cows, kids, hubby, blah, blah.

Jesus Christ Superstar.

Hey JC, JC, won't you fight for me? Zanna Hey, Zanna Ho, Superstar!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your 'goofing around' with the Queen Anne's lace, Jeannelle. It's beautiful!

And I hope you had a good Palmarum today.

That goofing around pic is great!

And the tune is from JC Superstar. I can sing almost every song in it. Want to hear??

Wow, nannykim! You get the prize for the longest comment ever!!

Your church service sounds heavenly.....I think I could become Anglican. There are some Episcopal churches in the bigger towns around here.....is that the same?

I wouldn't mind either if my funeral was a hymn-sing!

You are allergic to wheat? That's too bad.....how do you live that way? Is there oat flour?

Thanks for stopping by.

Kacey & Country Girl,

For sure, its from Jesus Christ Superstar. I wouldn't mind hearing all the songs again, actually.

Thanks for coming by!

Okay, the queen anne's lace pic proves you are an expert a photo stuff. You may have to help me figure out how to download my pics at least, if the Contrarian is unable to. lol..

And where is the recipe for the taco salad? The oatmeal cake sounds good. Do you frost it? Dates are a favorite of mine. The nuts and chocolate make it downright decadent and that's the way I like my desserts.

Sherry,

Goodness, NO, I'm not an expert at any aspect of photography, but thank you for the kind words. Do you have a digital camera? And a USB cord to connect it to the computer? That's how to move the photos from the camera to the computer. I see there are memory card readers you can buy to do the same thing to avoid using the camera's battery power. I might buy one of those in town this afternoon.

As far as this photo.....I was using the contrast and brighten settings on Picture It, and happened to run the contrast all the way up, and that turned the background black, which was really cool, I thought, so I left it like that. Then I clicked on the soft white edge thing, which can be narrowed and widened as you wish.....when its wider it has that 3D box look to it. Then I used the highlight edge button to do outer colored edges. Truly, there's little skill involved.....its just using technology that's on the computer.

I don't have a recipe for taco salad.....I'm sure you've made it. Just brown a pound of hamburger and mix with Taco Bell seasoning package and water. Then its just lettuce, and toppings.... lite sour cream, shredded cheese, salsa, chips, and whatever else anyone wants to put on. Everyone puts on their own toppings.

That easy cake is nothing fancy, but we like it warm with ice cream. No frosting needed with the chips and nuts on top.

Have a great day! I'm not getting any blogs read or post written today, as need to catch up on farm bookwork and run to bank and town.

Always a day late and a dollar short, I knew instantly that the lyric was from "Jesus Christ, Superstar" but someone beat me to it by a mile!

The cake sounds delicious. I love anything with dates in it. The bulletin typo is funny.
Hope you're having a great day.

Thanks for stopping in, rhymeswithplague and charlotte!

I got a big kick out of the typo, and the pastor even read the word as "refuse"!!

Back when JC Superstar, the movie, came out years ago, the parents in my church were concerned that we teenagers would be adversely influenced by it. Our pastor ended up showing the movie at a Sunday evening church service, and everyone discussed it afterwards. My mom didn't like the Mary Magdalene character very well, and the fact that the resurrection wasn't shown, but otherwise she didn't think it was too bad.
