Snowy Branches

Good morning!  I'm late with today's post because I wanted to get photos of the snowy tree branches we have here this morning.  The top one was taken around 7 a.m. and the one below around 9 a.m., hence the difference in color.

We got several inches of snow yesterday and last night.  Nice fluffy snow that hasn't blown around yet.

Tuesday

 

The photo is a sunrise scene from a few weeks ago.

Yesterday was a usual type day.  I got up at 4:30 to eat breakfast and get ready to go out for chores.  The temp was in the 20's when I headed to the barn.  No wind.  A very nice morning, though a bit slippery for walking.  

We weaned 10 calves the other day and that means 10 less calves for me to feed bottles to now.  I can handle that.  The calves all drank well.  Our dog, Lefty, followed me around hoping for an ear scratching, and the cats loitered here and there waiting for warm milk.

After chores I had coffee and checked Facebook and this blog.  After lunch my husband asked me to ride along to a nearby town to get a part.  Well, the part wasn't there so we came home again.  I then worked on taking down the Christmas tree.

Before long it was time to watch the late afternoon news.  Then it was time for calf chores again.  Supper was leftovers.  Then it was time to think of something to blog about.  And, that ended the day.

Here's the round barn that was on the farm where I grew up.  

I took this photo for 4-H, probably around 1970, back in the days of film cameras.  Remember those?  Film was expensive so you didn't take many pictures, one of each scene probably.  This photo, for example, is the only one I have of the old barn being used for pigs.

(I blogged about this barn most recently in 2011.  I found that out by typing "round barn" in the "Search This Blog" box in the side column.)

It was built in 1918 and survived until 2008 when it was hit by a tornado.  I hadn't taken a photo of the barn for years.  As luck would have it, though, a week before the tornado I stopped by and took a quick picture.  Maybe I jinxed the poor old barn!

Recently, I put this picture on a barn site on Facebook.  It got 400 responses.

Husband's Pigeon Photo

On Saturday I posted about not having any new photos to use here on the blog.   

Well, that morning my husband surprised the heck out of me by asking to use my camera.  I asked him what for and he said he wanted to take a picture of the pigeons that live in the cattle shed.  So, this is that picture.  It's not beautiful, but he did get the pigeons.

As You Wander

Are you getting tired of these sunrise photos?  Me, too. 

It's either this or the rime ice.  That's all I have for recent photos.  Maybe tomorrow something exciting will come along to take pictures of.  Not holding my breath, though.  I will have to go searching, wandering around looking for something.  

Did you see the quote in the top right corner?  "Not all who wander are lost."  Very true for bloggers, whether they are wandering to find photo subjects or whether they are wandering in their minds searching for something to blog about.  Hopefully, they are not lost.

Remembering Grandpa's Passing

This post recounts my memories of when my paternal grandfather died fifty-six years ago when he was sixty-five, on January 5, 1965.  I was six years old. 

I was awakened late at night by my dad who told me that Grandpa had died.  Grandpa and Grandma had just returned that day from visiting relatives in California.  Grandpa couldn't sleep and he got up to sit on the couch.  He asked Grandma to make him some tea and when she took it to him he was gone.  Grandpa died of a heart attack.  He'd had heart trouble for several years.

Grandma followed the old tradition of having the visitation in her home.  Grandpa's casket and the flowers were in the dining room.  I could see into the casket without being lifted up like my younger sister and cousins.  Dad told us that it wasn't really Grandpa lying there, it was just his shell, his soul having gone on to Heaven.  Many people came to the house to pay their respects.  My sister, our cousins, and I played upstairs where all the toys were.

I don't remember much about the funeral.  It was held at our small-town Baptist church.  Afterwards, we got in the car and drove to the cemetery hill outside of town.  I can still see the car lights turned on on all the cars heading to the cemetery.  That seemed really strange to me.  To this day, I get a slightly eerie feeling when I see car lights on during the day.

A few days later we had our usual sharing time in my first grade classroom.  I raised my hand to share something.  I walked up to the front of the room and said, "My grandpa died."  Matter-of-fact.  Kids are like that sometimes, I think.  I suppose I was sad when Grandpa died but I don't recall crying.

I wrote this post just for remembrance of a long-ago important event in my life.

Rime Ice & Informed Delivery

We awoke to more fog and frost yesterday.  Quite a bit was left over from Sunday. 

I think this is "rime ice" not hoarfrost.  You can read about the differences HERE.

It's afternoon now and blobs of frost have been falling from the trees all day.  No sunshine but the temps are in the 30's.

I should go get the mail.  "Informed Delivery" tells me we are receiving only bills today.  Maybe I'll let them chill in the mailbox until tomorrow.  Are you signed up for Informed Delivery from the USPS?  It shows you pictures of your incoming letters.  It is one more username and password to remember, so it must be good for your brain, right?!  Otherwise, it's rather useless for me to know what's coming in the mail.

Frosty Day

Yesterday was the second frosty Sunday in as many weeks.  Gray on gray was in vogue.

My husband took the next photo.

We had a pleasant Sunday.  In the afternoon we "attended" a Zoom gathering of old grade school and high school friends.  We graduated in 1976....that's 45 years ago this coming spring.

New Year's Day 2021

Happy New Year! This photo shows some of our round bales of cornstalks.  With the snow on them I think they resemble giant frosted mini-wheats.

My husband was somewhat disgusted when he came in for lunch today.  One of the cows appeared to be ready to freshen (give birth) but she wasn't trying to push.  Husband had checked inside to make sure the calf was in the correct position for birth.  It was.  He called the vet to make sure someone was available in case he needed their help.

After lunch and a short nap Husband went back out to check on the cow.  Thankfully, by then she had started to push.  She soon delivered a nice heifer calf.  That was our New Year's Day excitement.

Our traditions for New Year's Day include doing cow and calf chores as usual and watching the Rose Bowl parade and maybe part of a football game.  To eat we're going to have the rest of the baked taco dip our daughter brought for Christmas.  And. cheese and crackers and summer sausage which was a gift from our milk hauler.  We still have sweet treats left, too.  I don't think we'll starve.

Back to New Year's Eve---I was thinking about when I was a teenager and babysat most every New Year's Eve.  After the kids were tucked into bed, I would listen on the radio to the Top 100 countdown of popular songs.  I really looked forward to that.
